Pet transport from Germany to France or from France to Germany is uncomplicated because both countries are members of the European Union. The EU Pet Travel Scheme applies, which standardizes requirements for moving pets across EU borders. Here are the key steps and considerations:

Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip. The rabies vaccination must be given on the same day or after the microchip implantation.

There is a mandatory 21-day waiting period after the primary rabies vaccination before your pet can travel between Germany and France. If your pet’s most recent vaccination is a booster administered without a lapse in coverage, the 21-day wait is not required.

Rabies vaccinations valid for 1, 2, or 3 years are accepted in both countries. No other vaccinations are required for entry, but additional ones are recommended for your pet’s wellbeing, especially if your pet will be boarded or in frequent contact with other animals.

Travel Requirements: Pets must travel with their owner or with a person authorized by the owner. If a designated person accompanies the pet, their travel must occur within 5 days of the owner’s movement. If the pet is transported outside of this 5-day window, the journey may be classified as a commercial movement and subject to additional rules.

Additional Notes: In Germany, dogs must be registered with the local municipality and are subject to a dog tax. In France, dogs residing in the country must be registered with the national pet identification system (I-CAD). Both countries require compliance with local registration laws if the pet will reside there long-term.
