Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip. The rabies vaccination must be administered on the same day or after the microchip implantation.
There is a mandatory 21-day waiting period after the primary rabies vaccination before your pet can travel between Ireland and Belgium. If your pet’s most recent vaccination is a booster given without a lapse in coverage, the 21-day wait does not apply.
Rabies vaccinations valid for 1, 2, or 3 years are accepted in both countries. Other vaccinations are not required for entry but are recommended for your pet’s health, especially if boarding or contact with other animals is expected.
Tapeworm Treatment (Dogs Only): Dogs entering Ireland must receive a tapeworm (Echinococcus multilocularis) treatment administered by a veterinarian between 24 and 120 hours (1–5 days) before arrival. This treatment is not required when traveling from Ireland to Belgium.
Travel Requirements: Pets must travel with their owner or with a designated person authorized by the owner. If a designated person accompanies the pet, they must travel within 5 days of the owner’s movement. Transport outside this 5-day window may be classified as commercial and subject to stricter import requirements.
Additional Notes: In Belgium, dogs must be registered in the local municipal registry within 8 days of arrival if they will reside there. In Ireland, dogs must be licensed and registered in accordance with Irish law. Both countries enforce local identification and ownership rules for pets living in the country long-term.
