Pet transport from Ireland to Spain or from Spain to Ireland follows the rules of the EU Pet Travel Scheme, since both countries are EU member states. This makes the process relatively simple compared to travel between the EU and non-EU countries. Here are the key steps and considerations:

Your pet must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip. The rabies vaccination must be administered on the same day or after the microchip implantation.

There is a mandatory 21-day waiting period after the primary rabies vaccination before your pet can travel between Ireland and Spain. If your pet’s most recent vaccination is a booster given without a lapse in coverage, the 21-day wait does not apply.

Rabies vaccinations valid for 1, 2, or 3 years are accepted in both countries. No other vaccines are required for entry, but additional vaccinations are recommended for your pet’s health, especially if boarding or group contact is likely.

Travel Requirements: Pets must travel with their owner or with a designated person authorized by the owner. The designated person must travel within 5 days of the pet’s movement. If the pet is transported outside of this 5-day window, the movement may be considered commercial and subject to stricter import conditions.

Additional Notes: Dogs residing in Ireland must be licensed and microchipped in accordance with Irish law. In Spain, dogs must be registered in the local municipal pet registry of the area where the owner lives. Both countries enforce these requirements for resident pets.
